Using Personal Meeting IDs (PMI)

Zoom offers three primary methods of inviting participants, such as students, to active online meetings.

  1. Using a Meeting ID and Password

  2. Sending a Meeting Invite or Meeting URL by email or message

  3. Inviting directly from an already established Contacts list

Normally, when using the Meeting ID method, your meeting's ID and Password are randomized. This means that once you end a meeting and create a new one, the newer meeting will use a different Meeting ID and Password. This is in place for security reasons, but can be frustrating at times. As a teacher, your students will not have a consistent ID they can use to join, and students will always have to wait for a new ID and Password every week (or decide to use method 2 or 3 instead).

In order to add consistency to your invite process, you can decide to use your Personal Meeting ID (or PMI). Simply enable the use of your PMI by checking off the option when creating a New Meeting. More details and visual examples of this can be found in Hosting a Meeting.

Personal Meeting ID Settings (Windows/Mac)

When using the Windows/Mac version of Zoom, simply place your mouse cursor over your PMI when creating a New Meeting, and select PMI Settings.

Accessing your PMI settings from Zoom's Home Screen.
The PMI Settings window.

A settings window will appear, and here you can change your PMI (if you are using a paid account), your personal meeting Password, and some audio/video options that your meeting will default to. Ideally, we recommend that your video and audio settings are set to those shown in the example to the left.

Once you are done modifying your desired options, click Save.

Personal Meeting ID Settings (iOS/Android)

For Zoom users who use the app exclusively on a smartphone or tablet device, you can change your PMI settings in the Meetings menu along the bottom of your app's screen, or on the online Zoom Web Portal.

To change your PMI settings in the mobile app, log in to Zoom on your smartphone or tablet, and tap the Meetings icon on the bottom of your screen (between Meet & Chat and Contacts). You should see your Personal Meeting ID, as well as Start, Send Invitation, and Edit. You may see previously scheduled meetings on this screen as well. Tap Edit to bring up options to change your PMI password and other personal meeting room settings.

To change your PMI on the Web Portal, visit zoom.us using a web browser such as Safari or Google Chrome and Sign In to your account. Once you have logged into your account, navigate to your Settings (along the left menu column for computer browsers or the grey drop-down menu for smartphones/tablets). Within the Schedule Meeting subsection, scroll down until you find the appropriate PMI settings. Ensure that Enable Personal Meeting ID and Require a password for Personal Meeting ID (PMI) are turned on (the slider is BLUE with the circle on the right side). You may change your password to whatever you desire. Once you have made the necessary changes, you may exit your browser.
